Solar Panels

Solar panels are devices for capturing the energy in sunlight. Solar photovoltaic panels contain arrays of solar cells that convert light into electricity. They are called solar after the sun or "Sol" because the sun is the most powerful source of the light available for use. The solar cells are sometimes called photovoltaic cells, photovoltaic meaning literally "light-electricity".

Mono crystalline vs Polycrystalline Solar Panels:

Busting Myths

One of the most common comments that our specialist team hear from customers relates to the issue of mono crystalline vs polycrystalline (or ‘multi crystalline’) solar panels. Although mono crystalline panels had the initial advantage of being seen as the superior technology in the Australian market, as time goes on and both technologies improve, it becomes increasingly apparent that the the quality and reliability of the manufacturer is far more important than which of the two technologies is chosen.

Mono crystalline cells are made from a single crystal of ultra pure silicon. They are the original silicon solar cell and they are still the most efficient today. Mono cells are typically a little more expensive since they’re a little more difficult to manufacture. The benefit of mono cells is that they perform slightly better under low light conditions equating to better production on cloudy days versus polycrystalline panels. How much better?. Suffice to say, you may get up to about 0.5% better production per annum using mono cells versus using polycrystalline.

Polycrystalline cells are made up of multiple crystals and are generally less expensive to manufacture than mono cells. The gap in performance has narrowed significantly over the years to the point where they are very close. Since Polycrystalline panels are made up of several crystals, this means that they also absorb less sunlight and produce slightly less than mono cells per metre squared.

Single crystal silicon is more efficient at converting photons to electrons for electricity, the poly-silicon its much less efficient because electrons are captured or generated less efficiently where the crystals of silicon touch. However, even though poly solar panels are not as efficient, they are cheaper to manufacture so they can still be competitive on a $/watt basis. They would just need more area to produce the same amount of electricity as the mono-crystalline panels.

Even though a mono crystalline panel has the potential to last up to 50 years, most warranties only go up to 25 years which polycrystalline panels are able to reach just fine.

Overall, the production process for mono crystalline silicon is mature, and the process for polycrystalline in still maturing. As purity and process tolerances for polycrystalline improves, the performance gaps between the two are narrowing.

Alzone supply Australian made Solar Mounting Systems (Solar Racking) and have been supplying them throughout Australia and New Zealand longer than most other racking / mounting system suppliers have even existed.

All of the Alzone products are source within Australia. Rails are manufactured in Australia and components are source from Australian companies.

When Alzone first started supplying mounting systems there were only 5 Solar Panels Manufacturers supplying solar products to Australia, compared to now where there are hundreds maybe even thousands of solar panel manufacturers.

Alzone Pole Mount Kits

The Alzone Pole mount bracket is cast from Aluminium. When combined with Alzone rail it is designed to carry up to two large solar panels (each a maximum of 1700mm x 1000mm) or a series of smaller sized modules.

The Alzone pole mount comes with an internal adaptor tube to suit 2 sizes of pipe, the pipe diameter being determined by the maximum height of the panels as well as the size and number of modules.

The tilt angle can be adjusted from 10 degrees through to 35 degrees.

Stainless steel mounting hardware and anodised (corrosion resistant) aluminium rail is provided when the pole mount is purchased as a pole mount kit (P/No. SPMPMKIT).

Panel clamps and clamp bolts are ordered separately to they suit the number of modules and the size of the solar modules frame.

The pole required to mount these is not included with the kit and can be source from your local metal supply company. It is recommended to use a heavy walled galvanised pipe with either 40NB (48.3mm O.D.) or 50NB (60.3mm O.D.). The 80NB ( 88.90mm O.D.) sized pipe if compliance is required.

The standard pole mount kit uses Alzone Standard Rail and Alzone Eco Rail in combination with other Alzone components.

Alzone Pole Mount Kits (P/No SPMPMKIT1600x850 & P/No SPMPMKIT1700x1000) are Wind Load Certified by an Engineer for use in Australian Wind region A, providing the concrete footing, module installed height and panel dimensions comply. Compliance is available only when system uses the 80NB pole.

Alzone Ground Mount Frames

Alzone Ground Mount Systems are user friendly and quick to install. There are a few different types and configurations to choose from.

All Ground Mounts are offered with Wind Load Compliance for All Australian Wind Zones including Region D D Cyclone mounting.

Short Racks are available to suit a maximum of 2 x 1700mm x 1000mm Panels or a combination of smaller modules which take up the same area.

Short Racks are Engineered to comply with All Wind Zones. The Same frame will mount in Region A as the one which mounts in Region D.

Large Racks are available to suit a Maximum of 4 x 1700mm x 1000mm Panels or a combination of smaller or larger modules (up to 4 x 2100mm x 1000mm panels*) which take up the same area.

Large Racks are are Engineered to comply with All Wind Zones.

For Large Racks, you must specify whether system is for Region A, Region B, Region C or Region D. (if unknown provide location and we can determine wind load requirements)

Alzone Easy Rail

Easy-Rail is an economical aluminium solar rail section for mounting solar modules to flat, corrugated or tiled roofs.

There is no need for fitment of additional feet as this is already incorporated in the rail base.

Top slots for the rail bolts and a groove in the foot section to align fastening screws make it easier to install.

Longitudinal slots on top edge provide added grip for securing end clamps.

Convenient lengths are available and these come coated in a durable anodised finish.

Alzone Eco Rail

Alzone's new Eco-Rail is a more economical alternative to the standard non-flanged rail.

This lower profile rail has less extrusions, reducing the amount of hardware required to attach the rail to mounting brackets.

The longitudinal grooves on the top of rail ensure exceptional grip for the module securing clamps.

Eco-Rail is compatible with existing Alzone mounting brackets and clamps.

Manufactured from grade T6 aluminium this rail comes in various lengths and is anodised for increased durability.

Eco-Rail systems is suitable for use in all Australian wind regions and approved to meet wind loading, building structure and structural design standards.

Alzone Standard Rail

The standard Alzone rail section provides the main support structure for Ground Mounted Systems and used to be used on Roofs until first the Eco Rail and then the Cwic Rail superseded it..

Edge slots on the top and bottom of rail allow for installation of middle and end clamps to the rail via Alzone rail bolts.

Longitudinal slots on top edge provide added grip for securing end clamps to rail.

Various rail lengths are available and all these have two mid slots for convenient mounting of Alzone mounting feet and brackets.

Made from durable aluminium with anodising for increased weather protection these rail systems are engineer certified to comply with Australian standards for wind zones A, B, C & D

Alzone Tin Roof Mounting feet

Alzone have a wide range of feet available to suit any installation.

The most common and most sold popular is the Corrugated Foot or Corrugated Mounting Brackets, which conform to the roofs profile so as not to damage/alter shape of the roof.

Klip-lok and Trim-dek feet are also available which straddle the ridge of the Klip-lok or Trim-dek and allow penetration through the top of the ridge.

With a variety of different tiles it allows height adjustment of the stirrup, along with a stronger mount to the rafter.

The slotted upright allows adjustment for variation in roof conformity. The incorporated rail stirrup is designed to fit between the lower and upper tile.

The Alzone Tile kit 3 is a an anodised aluminium plate with an attached angle bracket and stainless steel stirrup.

This gives you the option of mounting either to the top or the side of the rafter.

Alternatively should you have some difficult tile spacing's, you can use the rafter angle bracket to mount to either side of the rafter and the extension plate to give you the ability to make adjustments either left or right.
