Beware of Counterfeit Anderson Power Connectors
Date Posted:1 January 2012
It has been brought to our attention that there are some counterfeit Anderson Power Products connectors on the market and we would like to warn buyers about the situation. We have been advised by the authorised Australian distributor that some of these counterfeit versions can also come marked Anderson Power but are not manufactured or endorsed by Anderson at all. Most counterfits are labeled or branded under the company selling them
Quality and safety are obviously the main concerns for customers. You can be assured that all connectors purchased from The 12 Volt Shop that carry the Anderson Power Products label are indeed genuine.
Features:
- There are no male and female Anderson plugs which makes your selection easier. Simply buy two of the same colour for a mating pair
- The contacts are self cleaning, which means that as they are mated and unmated, the contacts slide over each other cleaning contaminates off
- Contact life is 10,000 Connect/Disconnects with no load or 250 under load at the contacts rated current
- 600 volts continuous AC or DC
- In the SB® & SBS® series, the colours are keyed so that only the same colour will mate with itself
- There are a number of contact wire sizes to suit each housing
- Touchproof or SBS® connectors are also available
- There are also versions that have auxiliary contacts that can be used for signals etc.
Genuine Anderson Plug contacts are silver coated and self cleaning for superior electrical resistance and superior current carrying capabilities. Genuine Anderson plug contacts will oxidise and still provide Electrical current flow. Counterfit Andersons are tin plated copper which will rust or corrode and stop allowing electrical current to flow.
The body housing of the latest range of counterfeit Anderson Plugs have a lighter grey colour and the housing is smaller and lighter weight. In order to make the counterfeit products as cheap as possible we believe they have used a lighter grade of plastic as the housing itself is lighter and slightly smaller.
Casting; Anderson Power Products are proud of their brand and you see in a side by side comparison the genuine Anderson Power Products SB50 connector has the genuine Logo stamped clearly and proudly. The counterfeit logo stamping in the Anderson Plug is very poor.
The Counterfeit housing shows clear signs of being deformed. Most likely as a result of being cooled too fast in the manufacturing process. The will result is uneven wear and premature failure.
Material choice in the pins. The pins likewise are clearly inferiors to the Genuine Anderson Power Product connectors. The heart of the original Anderson Plug was the firm connection and even contact minimising voltage drop and handling high current.
Casting of pins, As with the material choice the casting of the pins is a critical part of the Anderson Plug. Poor connections result in voltage drop. When under load this drop in voltage causes heat buildup and will eventually contribute to failure.
